Hot tub at Esalen Institute, Big Sur. My friend Cheri and I spent some time here...and in these tubs...amazing meditation retreat.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, 1911...my great grandmother Rosalie Anselmo, who did "piece work" in the factory for slave wages, survived by reaching the roof, where she was pulled via ladder by students to the adjacent roof of an NYU classroom building.

Katharine Hepburn Garden at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, near the apartment we rented in Turtle Bay.

candid shot taken on the set of "The Philadelphia Story," w/ Hepburn, Stewart & Cukor.

Letitia Fairbanks, 1941

Fight with me for victory / the aging General lied / the time has come to take the throne / for God is on our side / and the cannon roared as the rivers ran red / sick the song of a martyr / for on every side stank the stiff blue dead /sacrificed to disaster / still the girl he had left behind / keeps his memory strong / for she hopes in vain for her love's return / now sixteen candles gone

"Half lives, half lived."

You are never too old to make new friends, and thank God for that, because otherwise I'd have never met the people responsible for this. This is the most profoundly retarded thing I have ever seen and I am totally, joyfully obsessed with it. In this episode, "The Sweeties" visit a nail salon.

Pasolini's "Salo," my nomination for the most disturbing film ever made. Saw this when I was 16. Note to parents: do not let your 16 year old watch this film.

What am I interesting in? I am interesting in finding affordable ways to entertain myself. Thank you for asking, Trisha.

My late father-in-law, Frank Bristow, who was the media spokesman for Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena, CA for 24 years (he was the guy who announced to the press the successes and failures of NASA's unmanned lunar landings and the searches for life on Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, etc.) was also an LA Times reporter from 1950 -1960. Among his many assignments was this one, the Lana Turner / Cheryl Crane / Johnny Stompanato murder scandal.

I wouldn't have thought to cast Carey Mulligan in "Gatsby," but she really does look the part. At least without my glasses.
