Santa Muerte... I am fascinated with cult figures in Latin American religions/culture, indigenous figures, morphed with catholic symbolism.

An alter constructed in Sorte Mountain during the Maria Lionza pilgrimage in Yaracuy, Venezuela.

Maria Lionza - Original Drawing- This piece humbly tries to condense such a magical story in one symbol. I have depicted Her naked, embraced by the snake who fell in love with her and surrounded by flowers and butterflies. One of the many names She has is Queen Of Heavens – for that, she is traditionally portrayed wearing a crown as a symbol of Her royalty among Spirits, and so did I, so the piece could join traditional elements with a more contemporary design.

MARIA LIONZA : DIOSA DEL AMOR Y LA SUERTE

Maria Lionza, Caracas. She is riding a tapir & holding a female pelvis aloft. Blades & D Banhart have written songs in her honor. She still lives on the mountain of Sorte. "Santa María de la Onza Talavera del Prato de Nívar" is the full name Christians gave her. Along with Guaicaipuro & Negro Felipe, she forms a trinity. 12 October is her feast day.
