Lady painter has put aside her brushes but her paint box is open and she still holds her mahlstick and easel while examining the progress on her canvas, The dark drapes and the upper portion of the rear wall are dark, highlighting the figure and the tools of her trade.

As is typical in Enjolras’ works, the light source is a lamp. The golden glow enhances the delicate skin tones of the ladies, particularly the one reading.

Her cheeks fill with air and her mouth is partially open suggesting a sigh of some magnitude. As the larger brushes are free of paint and a small brush is held in a painting position, one assumes some problems with fine detail work.
