Elizabethan Actor Edward Alleyn (1566-1626). EXCERPT: One of the most popular stage actors of the Elizabethan era, and for a short time, the Stuart era, was Edward Alleyn. In addition to the praise he earned as a tragedian actor who defined and popularized the roles of Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine and Dr. Faustus, as well as Thomas Kyd's Hieronimo, Alleyn was also a business man. Alleyn became a shareholder in several successful London theatre's in his final years.

Sir Francis Drake (1543-1596). Amazing sea captain and adventurer, Drake was the second man to circumnavigate the Earth. He conceived and in practice commanded Britain's impressive defense against the Spanish Armada (1588). His darkest stain: for some years he practiced slave trade in Africa with his uncle admiral Howard.

  • Edie Engel

I have doubts that Sir Francis was the nephew of Admiral Howard, which would have made him a cousin of the Queen. Drake's father was Edmund Drake, a Protestant farmer of Tavistock, Devon, and his mother was Mary Mylwaye. Neither parent appears to be related to the Howard family. He was involved in the slave trade, but with his cousin, Sir John Hawkins, not Howard.

Close-up of a portrait of the young Henry VIII found at the National Library of Wales.

Elizabeth "Bess" Throckmorton was a lady in waiting to Elizabeth I. She fell in love with Sir Walter Raleigh, and the two decided to marry in secret (it appears after Bess was already pregnant), because they knew Elizabeth would never consent to their marriage. When Elizabeth found out about it, she banished both her unchaste lady-in-waiting and her "Water" (as she had nicknamed him) from court. They went to live in the country for five years in exile.

So fresh and pretty and such a contrast to later portraits.
