Use the map to pin the settings of books you read. It's a great way to makes books really come alive. I think a world map would work just as well, especially for a lot of the books out now that travel through Europe and other continents.
To begin the year have students draw self portraits and write their name on 8 1/2 x 11 white drawing paper. Cut around them, mount on different bold colors of contruction paper and display with a large brown bear. Place a title across the top "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Who Do You See?" The self portraits are great to save for the end of the year to compare.
