Fauna - Adorable

This is a Caracal, NOT a Lynx, nor considered to be in the Lynx family anymore. Caracals are part of the SERVAL family. Forget about the similarity of the ears between the Caracal & the Lynx -- they are not in the same family anymore. People keep pinning this animal calling it a Lynx, or a Caracal Lynx and it is NOT. If you look at the Serval, the similarity is obvious. This is a pet peeve of mine when I see this cat being called a Lynx all the time; sorry for the venting :-D Happy Pinning.

"Racing Stripes" The King Cheetah has a recessive fur pattern mutation. First discovered in Zimbabwe in 1926, this very rare animal has been seen in the wild only 6 times. About 10K years ago, the population of cheetahs plummeted, perhaps to a single pregnant female worldwide. Modern cheetahs are so genetically similar as to be virtual clones, making this novel coat pattern all the more interesting. Photo by: Steve Jurvetson

The pit looks like a cat, but this carnivorous mammal is actually a relative of the mongoose, and is endemic to Madagascar. The pit is the largest mammalian carnivore on the island and has been compared to a small puma. Adults have a length 70-80 cm, and weigh between 5.5 to 8.6 pounds.

Yearly, Bikaner, in India, Rajasthan, hosts a Camel festival. Camel contests are held where camels are decked out with draping, buckles, saddles and ‘tattoos’...their coats are shaved, trimmed, dyed and styled to feature designer ‘tattoos’ engraved tattoo for each camel takes about three years to create. “First two years, there is just growing the hair and trimming.” Natives don’t use iron engraving. They cut and dye the animal’s hair for three years until they achieve the desired tattoo.

White-faced saki monkey-New World monkeys of the genus Pithecia. They are closely related to the bearded sakis of genus Chiropotes. Sakis' range includes northern and central South America, extending from the south of Colombia, over Peru, in northern Bolivia. and into the central part of Brazil. Sakis are small-sized monkeys with long, bushy tails. Sakis are diurnal animals. They live in the trees of the rain forests and only occasionally go onto the land.

The maned wolf is the largest canid in South America. It is also the tallest wild canid in the world, its stilt-like legs a useful adaptation for spying prey over the tall grasslands where it lives. Despite its name, the maned wolf is not a wolf at all, nor is it a fox, coyote, or dog. It is the only member of the Chrysocyon genus, making it a truly unique animal, not closely related to any other living canid. One hypothesis for this is that it is the last surviving species of the Pleistocene.
