Maori used kiwi feathers chiefly for ceremonial cloaks (kahu-kiwi). Kahu-kiwi are usually named and are reserved for chiefs because they’re considered as taonga(treasures). They are said to carry the wairua(spirit) of the birds themselves. During significant events – incl. deaths, marriages –a kahu-kiwi is drawn over the shoulders as a symbol of chieftainship and high birth. Today, the tradition of kahu-kiwi is continued using feathers gathered from kiwi that die naturally or by predation.

The Glowworm Caves in Waitomo, #NewZealand were first explored in 1887 by local Maori Chief, Tane Tinorau, accompanied by an English surveyor, Fred Mace. Formed over 30 million years ago there are two levels to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves which are 16 metres apart - the glowworms are found exclusively in NZ and are around the size of an average mosquito. Some staff employed at the caves today, many of whom are local, are direct descendants of Chief Tane Tinorau and his wife Huti.
