Hills Department Store was one of the leading discount chains in the U.S. when it arrived in Charleston. Founded in Youngstown, Ohio in 1957 by Herbert H. Goldberger, the retailer was the eighth biggest chain in the nation at its peak in the 1980s, with the majority of its stores located in in Ohio, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Toy record players with stands in the 1957 Sears Christmas catalogue. (I received a player like this in 1954 and became very popular with my friends because I could take it along and play our records. Still have it and all my 45s except for the Elvis ones. They disappeared when our class had its first reunion. Yep, I still suppied the music.)
