Pebble or Rock Words: A word that is a pebble does not tip the scale like a rock. Rocks are strong and have muscle! Find rocks outside your classroom and decorate the rocks to make Rock Garden of Words. We are always on the look out during read aloud time for Rock Words. At writing time, we are trying to put Rock words in our stories.

Story maps help student pull the story apart and figure out what what it's all about. Some may think that this is unimportant to teach students in higher elementary grades but students still need to "learn to read" not only "read to learn" from kindergarten to middle school and beyond. This learning doesn't just stop once readers have a firm grasp on how to read.

@Michelle Garrard Ran copies of the hand on many colors of paper and passed out pieces of sandpaper, waxed paper, cotton, beans, and macaroni. We talked about the texture and what the best describing word would be to tell about the texture of each of those pieces of matter. We glued a piece on each fingertip and wrote the texture word on the finger.
