These photos were taken in 2008, in Chile, when the Chaitén volcano erupted for the first time in 9000 years. The eruption also caused a spectacular lightning storm. This can happen when the hot gas and ash rises through the cooler atmosphere, causing a transfer of charge. The excess of electrons within the cloud makes it act like a capacitor, and if all the conditions are correct, huge electrical discharges may be observed as bolts of lightning during volcanic eruptions.
This is a rare meteorological phenomenon called a skypunch. When people see these, they think it's the end of the world. Ice crystals form above the high-altitude cirro-cumulo-stratus clouds, then fall downward, punching a hole in the cloud cover. #Meteorology #Weather #Clouds
Derweze, also known as the door to hell, is a 70 meter wide hole in the middle of the Karakum desert in Turkmenistan. The hole was formed in 1971 when a team of soviet geologists had their drilling rig collapse when they hit a cavern filled with natural gas. In an attempt to avoid poisonous discharge, they decided to burn it off, thinking that the gas would be depleted in only a few days. Derweze is still burning today (via goodnamesgone)

Russian biologist Alexander Semenov graduated in 2007 from Moscow State University’s zoology department where he studied invertebrate animals. Specifically: squid brains. Now he works as the chief of his diving team at the White Sea Biological Station, camera always in-hand, where he’s captured some of these extraordinary photographs of jellyfish and other wildlife.
