Elves are a race of divine beings endowed with magical powers. In medieval Norse mythology, Dökkálfar (Dark Elves) dwell in the Earth and Ljósálfar (Light Elves) live in Álfheimr - Elf home. In folklore they became associated with the fairies and assumed a diminutive size, lived in forests, under hills, or in wells and springs. 19th-century Romanticism restored them to full stature as men and women of great beauty. Elves entered the 20thC in the work of J. R. R. Tolkien.
