From 5th to 12th grade, I was a full-time band kid. It was a huge part of my life and many of my experiences in band shaped who I am. But now, I've turned my attention and passion towards fencing, through which I continue to grow, struggle, and compete. I feel truly content when I fence, and I'm sure I'll do it for years to come.
One of the things that attracted me to fencing was that fencers can remain competitive well into their 60s and 70s (with some people in their 80s and 90s still fencing). I was privileged to watch a 65-year-old foilist beat 20-something competitors at a national competition. They were fitter and faster than he was, but when they came close to score his bladework and strategy saw him land the hits and win the bouts.
