The Vikings 600-1100
Among the Vikings there were 3 broad social classes, the jarl, the free yeoman and the thrall. Vikings raided across Europe and often captured and enslaved people, among them Franks, Anglo-Saxons, and Celts. At this time, there was no sense of nationality in the North so the Vikings didn't confine their raids and slave taking to peoples outside Scandinavia; Icelanders had Danish slaves, the Norse kept Swedes, the Swedes captured Danes etc.

silk cuff embroidered with silver from a Viking man's grave, Sweden 10th century
Viking Silver jewelry: The highlight is an intricately carved silver cup, estimated value £200,000. It contains 617 coins & silver fragments, ingots & rings. Some of the pieces were from as far away as Afghanistan. The treasure is believed to have belonged to a rich Viking who buried it during the unrest following the conquest of the Viking kingdom of Northumbria in 927 by Anglo-Saxon king Athelstan. The hoard was purchased by 2 British museums. #VikingSilver #VonGiesbrechtJewels
