Fore-Edge Painting: Very popular in Victorian Britain, they were done in watercolour on the pages edges (the fore-edge) of a book. The page block of a book would be fanned & clamped so that an image could be painted onto the stepped surface of the page edges. The complete page edges were usually gilded which would result in the painted fore-edge disappearing when the book was closed, then when refanned, the painting would magically re-appear.
