Mark Bittman. I think once you become a grownup, you MUST have this in your kitchen. If you don't know how to do something, start here. It was my 24 year old kitchen bible. How to make a white sauce, what are different cuts of meat, what's a basic start for a bread, for a pie crust.... etc. So great. My copy is from 1999. It's a little rattier than this photo..... :)
