Renoir. "The Umbrellas." 1886. Renoir's paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated colour, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid compositions. In characteristic Impressionist style, Renoir suggested the details of a scene through freely brushed touches of colour, so that his figures softly fuse with one another and their surroundings.

Christina’s World by Andrew Wyeth, 1948. This is a depiction of Wyeth’s neighbour Christina Olson, who suffered from the paralysing condition polio. Once this factor is known, the piece goes from being a playful image of a runaway imagination, to an image of struggle and almost physical deterioration. There is, however, a sense of hope in the warm colour scheme and eye-opening atmosphere.
