Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, LA was built by George Swainy between 1837 and 1839 for Jacques Telesphore Roman. Jacques' father-in-law, Joseph Pile, was an architect and probably designed the square plan surrounded by 28 Doric columns. The an 800 foot double row of live oaks leading from the bank of the Mississippi River to the front door of the house was planted long before the house was built.

Pike's Peak, Colorado. Significant information: In July 1893, Katharine Lee Bates wrote the song "America the Beautiful", after having admired the view from the top of Pikes Peak. It appeared in print in The Congregationalist, a weekly journal, on July 4, 1895. A plaque commemorating the words to the song was placed at the summit.
