Films You Haven't Watched on Netflix, But Should
Punch-Drunk Love is the reason I keep asking why doesn't Adam Sandler do more serious movies rather than stupid slapstick comedies? Sandler's performance as a sales man who's life is a mess until he meets a girl who loves him for who he is. A wonderfully scripted movie seems to be made just for Sandler. He got a nomination for a Golden Globe as a best actor and deservedly so. Emily Watson co-stars with Sandler.
"Vera Drake" (dir. Mike Leigh, 2004) --- Vera Drake (Imelda Staunton) spends her days doting on her working-class family in 1950s England. But Vera also has a secret side: She visits women and helps them induce miscarriages, as abortion is not legal in the U.K. When the authorities get wind of her activities, Vera's world quickly falls apart.

British writer-director Andrea Arnold's sophomore feature won Best British Film at the 2010 BAFTAs.
The Kid with a Bike(Le Gamin au Vélo) - another PDX film fest favorite. After being abandoned by his deadbeat dad, 11-year-old Cyril Catoul is virtually adopted by a goodhearted hairdresser who tries to help him. But despite her kindness, the disillusioned boy soon falls in with a young drug peddler.
Let the Right One In (Låt den Rätte Komma In) -- "The constant target of bullies, 12-year-old Oskar spends his time plotting revenge and collecting news clippings about the grisly murders plaguing his town. But things change when he meets a new girl named Eli, a misfit vampire who steals his heart."
Deliver Us from Evil (2006) "This unsettling Oscar-nominated documentary from filmmaker Amy Berg investigates the life of 30-year pedophile Father Oliver O'Grady and exposes the corruption inside the Catholic Church that allowed him to abuse countless children.
