Books Worth Reading
Brief but beautifully written - Otsuka's poem-like novel follows the experience of Japanese women sent to the US as picture brides from the start of their deceptive marriages up to their internment during World War II. Otsuka writes as a collective of voices, which gives the novel a haunting quality and makes the narrative stand out as vivid snapshots in time.
The Buddha in the Attic--It's an interestingly-written novel about Japanese mail-order brides brought to the US during the Great Depression and their trials here in the States.
“Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swaps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it's yours.”
My hands down favorite book.
