Corkboard Connections: Get Money for Your Classroom Projects! (Free webinar on how to write a great DonorsChoose proposal.)

Five-year-old Josiah looks through a book in his classroom. With the nearest library a 30-minute drive away, Save the Children's Raising a Reader book bag exchange program provides the children in Queets with age-appropriate books they may otherwise not have access to. Children take these books home for two weeks and then receive a new batch of books.

5 year old Diverson poses with his painting. He was inspired to draw this because his mother could not allow him to use some of her water to bathe as he prepared to go to preschool the previous day. At school, children like him learn to express themselves through art under the HEART Project by Save the Children. "Since Diverson started going to the preschool he is now a cleverer and more intelligent child than he would if he was not going to preschool", said his mother. Photo by Amos Gumulira.

CAN YOU SEE ME? Katuwala (age 10) embraces his baby brother, Kalu, at a clinic in the Trobriand Islands. Kalu has severe malaria, a primary cause of child deaths in the country. Papua New Guinea is also experiencing social disruptions, including increased family violence, child abuse and tribal fighting. The gross primary school completion rate is only 57 per cent, and sexual violence is contributing to an ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic. - 2004 © UNICEF/Giacomo Pirozzi -
