Westfjords (Iceland). 'Iceland’s sweeping spectrum of superlative nature comes to a dramatic climax in the Westfjords – the island’s off -the-beaten-path adventure par excellence. The region’s uppermost peninsula, Hornstrandir, is the final frontier; the sea cliffs are perilous, the foxes are foxier, and hiking trails amble through pristine patches of wilderness that practically kiss the Arctic Circle.' www.lonelyplanet....

Hekla is the source of many folk tales and was long belived to be the entrance to Hell itself. Witches were also supposed to gather on the summit at Easter to meet with the Devil. It wasn't until 1750 that two scientist braved the hike to the top of Hekla and, finding no gates to Hell or any witches hanging out, decided to dismiss those theories.

Equally spectacular is the coastline along the east fjords. The challenge is finding a break in the fog. The fog along the east fjords is so thick and so persistent; days can go by without seeing any of the surroundings. We spent three days along the east fjords where the fog cleared for one hour in total. I’m still trying to work out if we were lucky or unlucky.
