Arnold Gorter (Dutch, 1866-1933). Landscape with Boat, ca. 1905 - 1910. Charles and Emma Frye Collection, 1952.052

  • Kathryn V. White

In this painting, Gorter did a wonderful job of creating starkness without aloneness. The tall elegance of the leafless trees that you can follow their lines in all directions makes the scene expand outwards. The tree in the center doesn't divide the painting, but enhances the scene.

Franz Unterberger (Austrian-Belgian, 1838-1902). The Grand Canal, Venice, n.d. Charles and Emma Frye Collection, 1952.177

  • Kathryn V. White

If I can't get to Venice, then seeing such a beautiful rendering of it is the second best thing!

Albert Neuhuys (Dutch, 1844-1914). Dutch Woman and Child, n.d. Charles and Emma Frye Collection, 1952.126

Franz von Lenbach (German, 1836-1904). Eleonora Duse, 1886. Charles and Emma Frye Collection, 1952.094

  • Rebecca Albiani

La Duse was the greatest Italian actress of her day, a rival to Sarah Bernhardt, and this is my favorite female portrait by Lenbach in the Frye. It captures her ability to animate the stage, the space around her.
