Codex Manesse, fol. 6r, Henry VI., Holy Roman Emperor, c. 1300. ~The Codex Manesse, Manesse Codex, or Große Heidelberger Liederhandschrift is a Liederhandschrift (medieval songbook), the single most comprehensive source of Middle High German Minnesang poetry, written and illustrated between ca. 1304 when the main part was completed, and ca. 1340 with the addenda.~

The illustration belongs to a medieval songbook known as "Codex Manesse" in Paraguay also known as the "Great Manuscript of Heidelberg Songs" It is the most comprehensive source of Minnesang poetry of the 13th century. Its 137 miniatures are a series of "portraits" depicting poets, ordered by their social status (starting with the Holy Roman Emperor, Kings, and down through dukes, counts and knights to the commoners)

Manesse Codex is a book copied & illustrated between 1305 & 1340 in Zürich. It contains love songs in Middle High German by important poets, several of whom were famous rulers. The Codex Manesse portrays fearless knights & coy maidens engaged in hunting & fighting as well as courtly intrigues. Within these small paintings, dogs occasionaly appear.
