Sampat Pal Devi and her gang of pink sari clad women fight injustice in Uttar Pradesh. This mother of five believes in the equal rights of women and is willing to take strong measures to defend them. The women dress in radiant pink sari's a color that in India stands for independence as it's not aligned to any political party.. and of course looks great on these fears women.
The Gulabi Gang was formed 2006 by Sampat Pal Devi in Northern India. This region is one of the poorest districts in the country & is marked by a deeply patriarchal culture, rigid caste divisions, female illiteracy, domestic violence, child labour, child marraiges & dowry demands. The group is known as Gulabi or ‘Pink’ Gang because the members wear bright pink saris & wield bamboo sticks. Sampat says, “We are not a gang in the usual sense of the term, we are a gang for justice.”
