The Headington Shark. The fiberglass shark was created by artist John Buckley & placed on the roof of Bill Heine in 1986.Heine had originally placed it on his roof to mark the 41st anniversary of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan in WW2.That immediately drew criticism along with a threat from the Oxford City Council to remove the shark by force, according to the Oxford Mail. However, Heine took the issue to a public inquiry & was eventually granted permission to keep the shark in place.
This odd sight graced the skies of Boston in 1984 as a helicopter delivered a model dinosaur to the city's Museum of Science. But in a still photo, we can almost imagine that it's headed toward the zoo instead. Photo by Arthur Pollock.
