Teach123 - tips for teaching elementary school: Friday Fun Day

Front folders on desks for unfinished work to keep it from getting lost in the "black hole." Laminate them and add a name tag, voila! Could also put them on the side of desks if you have them in groups.

Love this idea! This would stop them from hiding unfinished work in their desk. :)

Mandy's Tips for Teachers: First Day of School Lessons! Absolutely LOVE these 1st day plans. I especially like the large grocery bags for all supplies (deal with them on day 2). I am definitely reworking my 1st day plan ideas!

I took the 3rd Grade Common Core State Standards and turned them into student and teacher friendly “I can” statements. I used those to create these records. I made two types of records. One for tracking an individual student’s progress and one for teachers to track when they have taught/reviewed each standard. There are records for each content area: Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking Listening, and Math. I included space for comments for each standard. $ #3rdGradeCommonCore

"Gotta Go" cards. Students each get five cards at the beginning of the week. When they need to "go" they put one of their cards in the basket. Makes them use their cards only if it is an emergency as apposed to social time.

I love this idea! It eliminates the wait time while each kid "digs" through the treasure box. Everyone can SEE what the choices are and they can decide what they want while they are waiting for others to pick something.

How this teacher manages: instead of having classroom jobs, she had a boy and girl "helping hand" of the day. The two helpers were responsible for all of the classroom jobs (line leader, door holder, running errands, etc.) Just write each students' name on a cutout of a hand and hang the hands on the wall and flip the hands each day. It is such a super easy system, and it works out so that students get to be a helper about once every other week.

TONS OF TEACHING IDEAS~ One tip explains Game Day. For an hour on the last Friday of the month her students bring in board games. These are set up inside hula hoops around the classroom. Small groups rotate from game to game. Not all students complete all the games, but they usually get the opportunity to do at least 3. This activity is a fun way to get kids to read, follow directions, and practice taking turns. Can also be done with math or other learning center games!
