In 1979 Toshio Hara opened the first museum in Japan to concentrate on post WWII art. The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo's Shinagawa district showcases the latest developments in art, design, architecture, music and dance. The museum building is the Hara family's former residence and its Bauhaus-inspired design by Jin Watanabe (1938) is a fine example of early Showa modernist architecture.
