DIY: An old dresser is painted, decoupaged with paper, sanded at the edges, stained to darken the paper, then sealed. This is a good technique to use on a damaged piece of furniture or when the veneer is chipping. Link shows no DIY, but has pictures of the steps.

On the living room wall next to the window, insead of a mantle. would be a nice place to decorate w accessories if you dont have a mantle. could hang xmas stockings, decorate seasonally, etc. also a good place to use the old window.
