Aurora Borealis & Northern Lights

The ultimate energy source of the aurora is the solar wind flowing past the Earth. The magnetosphere & solar wind consist of plasma (ionized gas), which conducts electricity. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic & Antarctic) regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere & solarwind & are directed into the atmosphere
