Put Goldfish in your rain barrels to eat the mosquito larvae. Clever.

Instead of putting rocks in the bottom of big porch planters, fill the bottom with sealed empty plastic 20 ounce bottles! They give the pot the drainage it needs, without adding all that extra weight! So smart!!

Very smart! Rinse veggies right in the garden and then re-use the water on the plants. Find a plastic bucket and small laundry basket/colander at the dollar store!

A Simple Do It Yourself Soil Test Perform your soil test by placing a sample into two separate cups or containers. Add vinegar to one. If it fizzes your soil is alkaline. If not, add some water to the second cup and stir. Add baking soda. If it fizzes you have acidic soil. If neither have a reaction your soil is somewhat pH balanced.

I bought the laundry baskets at a local dollar store (I have 2 baskets). I filled the baskets with about 2" of soil & compost, then put a seed potato into each basket (each potato was cut into about 3 pieces with 2-3 eyes each). I then covered the potato with soil, and have been gradually filling the baskets with soil as the potatoes grow, simulating "hilling" the potatoes in a garden.

The Top 10 Mistakes Beginning Gardeners Make

Moss Paint... ever wonder how they get moss to grow on flower pots? This moss paint will grow wherever it is planted.

Place newspaper over the dirt 3-4 pages thick and then cover it with mulch. The newspaper will prevent any grass and weed seeds from germinating, but unlike fabric, it will decompose after about 18 months. By that time, any grass and weed seeds that were present in the soil on planting will be dead. It’s green, it’s cheaper than fabric.
