The Pittock Mansion is a French Renaissance château in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon originally built as a private home for The Oregonian publisher Henry Pittock and his wife, Georgiana. It is a 22 room estate built of Tenino Sandstone situated on 46 acres (190,000 m2) that is now owned by the city's Bureau of Parks and Recreation and open for touring. In addition, the grounds provide panoramic views of Downtown Portland.

Inside the nine-foot high first order Fresnel lens at Umpqua River Lighthouse in Oregon. Built in 1894, Umpqua used the identical construction plan as the famous Heceta Head Light. However, Umpqua got this beautiful ruby and clear crystal Fresnel. The lighthouse is open for tours, and visitors get a chance to pop up into the interior of the lens and watch this massive red and white beauty rotate around you.

Hood River, Oregon. This is another reasonable day trip from Portland. This is an adorable town with a spectacular view of Mt. Hood. The riverfront is known for world-class kiteboarding and windsurfing and on nice days you can go down and enjoy watching it all (or if you are braver than me, try it).

Cathedral Park In 1949, 15 year-old Thelma Taylor was abducted at a bus stop by a drifter named Morris and taken under the St. Johns Bridge in an area known at Cathedral Park. There she was bound and raped and held for a week before dying. Morris was eventually caught and executed for her death but Thelma’s suffering didn’t end there.
