Irena Sendler b: 15 February 1910 Warsaw, Russian; d: 12 May 2008 (aged 98) Warsaw, Poland -- Sendler smuggled 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto and then provided them with false identity documents and with housing outside the Ghetto, thereby saving those children from being killed in the Holocaust. The Nazis eventually discovered her activities, tortured her, and sentenced her to death; but she managed to evade execution and survive the war.
A 1942 photo of Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl and Christoph Probst - members of the student resistance group, “White Rose”. The group distributed pamphlets across Germany appealing to the public’s sense of moral duty, calling for resistance to the Nazi dictatorship, and demanding an end to the war. Sophie would be caught and reported to the Gestapo on the 18th of February, 1943 at Ludwig Maximilians University. All three would then be sentenced 5 days later and beheaded. George Witt

Sally Ride - American physicist and former NASA astronaut. On June 18, 1983 Sally Ride became the first American woman in space when she blasted off from Cape Canaveral on board the Space Shuttle Challenger. She was 32 at the time, which also made her the youngest American ever to go into space.
