In several wooded areas around Cumbria and Portmeirion in the UK, people have been hammering small denomination coins intro trees for centuries. The practice is said to date back as far as the early 1700s, in Scotland, where ill people would stick florins into trees in hopes that the trees would cure their illnesses.

This stunning and scary stairway is real. Hanging high in the sky from the side of a building without so much as handrail, this staircase is dizzying just from the photos. These stairs are attached to the exterior concrete wall of this towering Swiss skyscraper over ten stories off the ground. They are not actually used by anyone. They are, instead, the work of spectacular staircase designers Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann.
