I wonder if this is how Elizabeth Bennet tucked up her dress, so as to end up with muddy petticoats instead, then let the dress down again to hide to muddy hem when she arrived at Netherfield? Mrs Hurst sneers 'I hope you saw her petticoat, six inches deep in mud, I am absolutely certain; and the gown which had been let down to hide it, not doing its office.'
