Neuschwanstein - Hohenschwangau, Germany. The castle barely survived the World Wars, first acting as a depository for Nazi loot stolen from France. Then narrowly escaping destruction when Nazi forces considered blowing up the palace at the end of the war so it wouldn't fall into enemy hands. Today it is one of the most popular tourists sites in Europe and attracts 1.3 million tourists every year.
