This is what I wanted in the middle of the great-room, in-between the kitchen, dining-room and the living-room. Imagine, eating a bowl of oatmeal at the table on a cold winter morning, sitting by a roaring fire. What we went with instead is a corner fireplace with a stone hearth in the living-room that can still be enjoyed by all those at the table on a cold winter morning.

Use a polyester filler to rebuild rotted or damaged wood. You can mold and shape it to match the original wood profile. It takes paint well and won't rot.
