World War I (WWI) was a global war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. It was predominantly called the World War or the Great War from its occurrence until the start of World War II in 1939
Crewman of a German U-boat. During World War I, the crew of German U-Boats were treated like royalty when they were docked because of the difficulty of their jobs. Upon docking, the crew filed out on shore leave and were generally given whatever they wanted while a cleaning crew scrubbed the sub from top to bottom.
Sgt. Stubby fought in 17 battles in WWI. He was in the trenches in France for 18 months, survived being gassed and went on to warn his unit of incoming gas attacks and artillery shelling; he located wounded soldiers, and helped capture a German spy. After the war, he was the Georgetown Hoyas’ mascot.
