The Perfect Library

TACIM2 Wallbox This is what we're using at one location - users can scan their library barcode (or key it in) and have it confirm with our library database that they are a real library card holder. This in turn unlocks the front door to one of our unstaffed locations.

I saw one of these in Ashland, OR this weekend. Would libraries be appropriate sponsors for something like this at our locations?

The Mediabank at Apache Junction Public Library provides 24/7 access to DVDs, CDs, and video games.

Makerspaces, Participatory Learning, and Libraries | The Unquiet Librarian. A great post about education and makerspaces that uses the Library as Incubator Project definition of makerspace: "Makerspaces are collaborative learning environments where people come together to share materials and learn new skills… makerspaces are not necessarily born out of a specific set of materials or spaces, but rather a mindset of community partnership, collaboration, and creation."

I like how they built a "future use" space that they think will be used like the Apple Genius Bar - anticipating growth in use of unique items, and the "try it out" function of a library is really cool.

Magazine storage is logical and low-maintainence. Maximizes the front cover better than any other periodical display I've seen. (magazines are very smartly stored by The Shifted Librarian, via Flickr)
