An amazing story about elephants that defies human explanation. For 12 hours, two herds of wild South African elephants slowly made their way through the Zululand bush until they reached the house of late author Lawrence Anthony, the conservationist who saved their lives. The formerly violent, rogue elephants were rescued and rehabilitated by Anthony. As the wife of the ruler of Dai, Xin Zhui led a life of luxury 2,000 years ago in China. Aerogel, also know as frozen smoke, is the world’s lowest density solid, clocking in at 96% air. If you hold a small piece in your hand, it’s practically impossible to either see or feel, but if you poke it, it’s like styrofoam. It supports up to 4,000 times its own weight and can withstand a direct blast from two pounds of dynamite. It’s also the best insulator in existence.

droppingthephysics: The transfer of Information in any form is limited to the speed of light. If our Sun suddenly disappeared, it would take 8 minutes for the last photon emitted by the Sun to reach Earth; the Earth would be lit for 8 minutes before darkening. What’s even stranger is that the Earth would remain in its orbit and revolve around nothing for the entire 8 minutes! Even the force of gravitation can’t travel faster than light.

In the 1930s, workmen clearing the dense jungle of Costa Rica stumbled upon some incredible objects: dozens of stone balls, many of which were perfectly spherical. They varied in size from as small as a tennis ball to an astonishing 8 feet in diameter and weighing 16 tons. Although the great stone balls are clearly man-made, it is unknown who made them, for what purpose and, most puzzling, how they achieved such spherical precision.

The analemma is the name for the figure-eight path that the sun follows in the sky throughout the year, when photographed at exactly the same time during the day.
