1800-1815 American (New England) Embroidery stand at the Winterthur Museum, Delaware - This is quite an ingenious piece of work, in my opinion: it combines a suspended embroidery hoop, a table and a box to store sewing implements into a single portable piece of furniture. This would allow a woman to be seated comfortably as she did her needlework, rather than have to bend over because it's been placed in her lap.

Produced by the Kimball & Morton Company of Scotland, this "lion" form was manufactured circa 1870. The basic mechanics are very much those of Singer's "Family" machine, indeed the model was widely advertised as the Lion Singer. The same company also produced a another lion variant during the early 1900s.Close up
