When a loved one died the Victorians were presented with an opportunity to imortalise their beloved in a way that was previously impossible: they could photograph them. Because of the high cost of photography, post-mortem photographs were, in many cases, the only photograph a family had of the deceased.
The actual advertisement for the crew for Shackleton's Antarctic expedition. Their ship was subsequently trapped and crushed in the ice, resulting in months surviving on an ice flow and open boat journeys in freezing conditions to tiny islands while attempting to reach civilization. Amazingly, everyone survived.
