The labor of dressmakers was relatively inexpensive in the 19th century, allowing affluent women to commission and own clothing that would be considered of couture-level luxury today. This jacket has 36 velvet covered buttons pink silk trim around the cuffs, neckline and waistline....extraordinary detail, precision and care in the making.

This item was deaccessioned from the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York. Beautiful brown and gray silk brocade bodice with brown partial lining. Dropped shoulder seams characteristically of Civil War period bodices.
