Around the World

The Maijishan Grottoes are a series of 194 caves cut in the side of the hill of Majishan, Gansu Province, China; over 7,200 Buddhist sculptures are cut from the rock with over 1,000 square meters of murals. Construction began ca. 384-417 CE. One of the string of Buddhist grottoes found in this area, lying on the crossroads connecting China and Central Asia; several of the sculptures appear to have Indian—and even SE Asian—features that could have come north via these N-S routes.
