End of the road: Tom Simpson, the British rider nicknamed 'Major Tom' by the French media, made history in 1962 when he became to first Briton to wear the leader's yellow jersey at the 49th edition of Tour. French revolutions: compatriots Jacques Anquetil (left), the first rider to win five Tours, battles with rival and Raymond Poulidor on the Puy de Dôme during the 1964 edition of the race. Despite Anquetil's dominance of the race it was Poulidor, the man known as 'the eternal second' who won the affections of the French. Indeed, even to this day spectators are heard shouting 'Allez, Pou-Pou!' in honour of the man who never won the Tour
