The terminals, even more graphically, show the head of a deceased man, with half the image eaten away from decay. Aerogel, also know as frozen smoke, is the world’s lowest density solid, clocking in at 96% air. If you hold a small piece in your hand, it’s practically impossible to either see or feel, but if you poke it, it’s like styrofoam. It supports up to 4,000 times its own weight and can withstand a direct blast from two pounds of dynamite. It’s also the best insulator in existence.

In 1913 the Oregon State Insane Asylum began to cremate the remains of unclaimed patients and their ashes were stored in copper canisters. After decades in storage the canisters have undergone chemical reactions resulting explosions of vivid blue-green corrosion. Photographer David Maisel was granted access to the room in which the canisters were stored to document them for his spectacular book, Library of Dust.
