Fralinger's Salt Water Taffy had its beginnings at a taffy stand on Applegate Pier in Atlantic City. A former glass blower and fish merchant, Joseph Fralinger, took over the stand in 1884 and began to perfect his own recipe for Salt Water Taffy. As Fralinger's grew to six locations, Joseph decided that the Salt Water Taffy should return home with resort visitors. He began packing the taffy in one pound oyster boxes, making it the first Atlantic City souvenir.
