Historical/ Biographical: the constant use of the word "phony" in the novel reveals Holden's struggle with society as a whole. He sees them as corrupt and wrong, and tends to criticize everyone he encounters. Even though Holden uses the word to criticize and make others vulnerable, it actually represents his own vulnerability, unable to accept people for who they are and see them for what they truly are as well.
