Use a baggie inside your paint cups... clean up is so much easier. So smart!
I don't know if this would take up too much space to store, but this could work for K-2 instead of being on the carpet. Maybe it would stop the endless struggle to get them all to stay in their spot on the carpet, sitting criss-cross- might help them focus better...also thought if there is a handout, it could be hidden beneath.

Baby food jars are great for paint! After mixing colors, the children named them. We prompted the children with questions like, "What does this color remind you of?" "Have you seen anything this color?"
Yet another simple but effective storage idea for craft- perfect for kids craft, but would possibly use plastic containers instead of glass for safety. Also a way of clearing bench/shelf space and to brighten a room as the colours of the craft material can be easily seen.
