Opheila by John Everette Millais (1851/2), my favorite painting. This is the drowning Shakespeare's Ophelia from play Hamlet. After her father's murder by Hamlet she commits a suicide - picking flowers she slips and falls into a stream and then literally allows herself to die. She sings as her sinking body floats with her hands raised to accept the death. The flowers are symbolic: the poppy means sleep and death, daisies innocence and pansies love in vain. The painting was regarded in its day...
