SOIL BASICS. No need to buy a pricey soil testing kit, you can easily do it yourself. Scoop some soil into a container, add 1/2 cup of vinegar, if it bubbles/fizzles it's alkaline. If there's no reaction, scoop up more into a 2nd container. Add 1/2 cup of water & stir, ten add 1/2 cup of baking soda, if it bubbles/fizzles it's acidic. Don't know what type of soil you have? Another good thing to use is baking soda. It neutralizes the ph in the soil and nothing will grow there. I use baking soda in a 6" wide area around all of the edges of my flower beds to keep the grass and weeds from growing into my beds. Just sprinkle it onto the soil so that it covers it lightly. I usually have to do this twice a year - spring and fall.
